Dance & Culture
The first round of the Phalaphala FM and Matsila Development Trust cultural dancing competition, which was held on Saturday at Bungeni, was a huge success and attracted many spectators. Different cultural dances of the Vhavenda, Tsonga and Pedi, namely xibela, tshigombela, xitaitai, xigumbu, malende and shikhamba, were demonstrated during the event.
Chief Livhuwani Matsila said that the Matsila Development Trust had been established to provide an opportunity for different communities to exercise their culture. "The main purpose is to form partnerships with different communities," he said.
He added that the traditional leaders were serious about restoring culture and indigenous knowledge and commended the organisers for the initiative of reviving culture through traditional dances. He appealed to the youth to respect elderly people and stated that Africans must be proud of themselves, their culture and traditions. He stressed the fact that immorality was the enemy of traditional leaders since people had moved away from good morals.
"As an indigenous leader, I value the importance of giving Phalaphala FM more support for their efforts of ensuring that the indigenous dances of our forefathers do not fade away," he said.
Tomorrow (Saturday), the elimination rounds of the zwigombela and malende competition will take place at the Tshifulanani Stadium, while the final will be held on 12 December at Rabali Stadium.
