“Study hard to honour Nwedamutswu”

Premier Stan Mathabatha has urged the Grade 12s of 2015 to work towards an 80% pass rate in hounour of the late MEC for Education, Ms Thembisile Nwedamutswu.

In the State of the Province address in the Limpopo Legislature in Lebowakgomo on Tuesday, Mathabatha referred to Nwedamutswu as "an outstanding educator and a selfless servant of the people." She passed away on 9 January this year after a short illness.

“Although for a short period as the MEC for Education, she played a pivotal role in changing the landscape of education in our province. In her honour and memory, we urge the Class of 2015 to settle for no less than an 80% pass rate,” said Premier Mathabatha.

The premier stated that in 2014, the education department had committed itself to ensure "that we have more well-qualified teachers for our children, proper educational facilities and timely delivery of text books. We are therefore pleased to report that we have covered much ground in this regard. In order to capacitate and equip educators and curriculum advisors with a deeper knowledge of both content and teaching methodology, we have trained more than a thousand educators through the continuous professional development programme."

According to him, the department plans to place a further 300 teachers and 80 curriculum advisors in the same training programme." He emphasised that they would continue to provide all no-fee-paying schools with nutritional meals.

He added that storm-damaged schools would be fixed and provision had also been made for the construction of new schools, classrooms, laboratories and libraries.
