“Humble and diligent servant” laid to rest

Pres Jacob Zuma has called on motorists to observe and obey the rules of the road. He delivered the eulogy at the Salema Sports ground near Xikundu outside Malamulele during the burial of the Minister of Public Service and Administration, Mr Collins Chabane.

“Drivers should observe and obey the rules of the road, regardless of whether there are road traffic officials or not. Careless driving on our roads will not be tolerated and those found driving recklessly will face harsh fines,” Zuma said.

Zuma was joined by Limpopo Premier Stan Mathabatha, Vhavenda King Toni Mphephu Ramabulana, various cabinet ministers, businessman Patrice Motsepe, various cabinet ministers and numerous traditional leaders.

Zuma described Chabane as a brilliant son from Xikundu village who dedicated his life as a freedom fighter and served the country humbly and diligently. He said he was among the people who recruited the late Chabane to join Umkhotho we Sizwe at the age of 17.

Speakers after speaker described Chabane as a hero of heroes, a combatant for life and a patriot to the end. A brother of Chabane, Ronald, said his brother’s death had left the family devastated as they had lost someone who was close to the family.

“Collins was a simple man, despite his status in the government and in the African National Congress. We have lost a giant. God knows why He has taken him so early,” said Ronald Chabane.

Min Chabane (55)  passed away on Sunday, 15 March, in a car crash on the N1 near Polokwane. Two of his guards, sergeants Lesiba Sekele and Lawrence Lentsoane, also died in the collision.

Chabane is survived by his wife, Mavis, and two children, his son Matimba and daughter Tsakani.
