Children celebrate national library week

A pro-reading group, Friends of Takalani and Nalibali, is adamant that established readers' clubs will nurture the culture of reading through educational and playful activities.

As part of national library week celebrations a fortnight ago, the Friends of Takalani spent their time at Takalani Children’s Home in Siloam.

The event was also organised to complement a container library that was donated to the home last year after the group had sought a sponsorship.

The group was aiming to encourage children residing at the home to develop their knowledge through reading and engaging in educational activities beyond what they were learning at school.
The library project coordinator, Ms Takalani Muloiwa, said their project would foster a culture of reading.

“Our main aim is to foster a culture of reading and writing through educational and playful activities,” she said.

Nalibali cluster mentor in Limpopo Ms Rinae Sikhwari said their campaign was designed to encourage reading and writing for enjoyment. “We encourage young people throughout the province to understand that reading is fun and beneficial,” said Ms Sikhwari.

She added that it was established that children learned more easily when they were playing. “We adapted that model and we encourage activities such as story play, normal reading clubs, teenage readers clubs and community reading clubs to instil that reading culture,” she added.

The Friends of Takalani presented trophies to the children in different categories to motivate them. The group’s chairperson, Mr Rudzani Thangwana, said they had been assisting the Takalani Children’s Home over the past nine years.
