First title deeds for jubilant Musina house owners

Musina was abuzz with celebrations as the MEC for the Department of Co-operative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (CoGHSTA), Makoma Makhurupetje, recently handed over title deeds to jubilant house owners.

A title deed is a legal document constituting evidence of a right to ownership of property and it helps to ensure that people are occupying land and houses that are lawfully registered in their names.

The event was held at the open field next to the South African Police Service's satellite office in Nancefield Extension 9. Accompanied by Executive Mayor Tshitereke Matibe of the Vhembe District Municipality and Mayor Mihloti Ramoyada, the MEC handed over 334 title deeds to title holders during the event.

Makhurupetje said the government took pride in uplifting the lives of all people. “We are delighted to see that our people really appreciate the work that we are doing as a caring government. Our goal is to bring a better life to every person in this country.”

She mentioned that the presenting of the title deeds was a milestone in the governmet's programme to provide proper housing for all. "Now that you have legal documents to your properties, you should make sure that you take good care of them. Make sure that the houses are always in good condition and not overcrowded. Do not allow anyone to rob you or claim ownership of your property. Report any kind of property ownership corruption or fraud to the relevant officials.”

Ramoyada expressed joy that the Musina Municipality was part of the government "which ensures that the lives of our people are improved. We pride ourselves on putting smiles on our people’s faces on a daily basis.”

Ms Selina Makaikeni Machete (66), a grandmother of four, was among the people who braved the scorching sun to receive their title deeds. “I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to our government for their hard work in ensuring that ordinary people like me have a property registered in their names. I have waited for many years to get this title deed,” said Machete while wiping tears of joy from her face.
