Water and sanitation under scrutiny

A summit highlighting the theme Water is life, sanitation is dignity took place at the Karibu Leisure Resort in the Greater Tzaneen Municipality area last Thursday.

Stakeholders from the mining sector, the farming fraternity, academics, water-user associations, traditional leaders, non-governmental organizations, civil society organizations as well as the private sector deliberated on solutions to water and sanitation issues.

Premier Stanley Mathabatha opened the summit and added  that the summit had brought together various role players in the water and sanitation sector to identify challenges of water and sanitation in Limpopo.

He mentioned that the event was the culmination of district water summits, which focused on mining and agriculture in the context of water needs and usage.

The Minister for Water and Sanitation,  Ms Nomvula Mokonyane, said that it was time “to go back to basics, given the fact that we are dealing with a scarce commodity and also with climate change adding to the challenge of getting  rain water.”
