Young woman stabbed to death

Women's Month has claimed another life, this time that of a young woman. A cloud of sadness hangs over the Nzhelele area, after an 18-year-old girl was stabbed to death in a street at Siloam village on Saturday night. Patience Mukhuba was stabbed numerous times all over her body.

Ms Mukhuba's brother, Mr Prince Mukhuba, said that the family members were still shocked and very disturbed about her death. "She was still young and the family was still expecting a lot from her," he said. Prince added that the family would love to see the law take its course. "We want to see a severe punishment. The accused has to pay for what he has done," he emphasized.

"I am speechless. My sister was everything to me. Losing her is like falling down to the ground on my face. She used to cook and wash for me. All of us will die, and as her brother, I will one day follow her. I am saying all this because I am bitter," he said.

The spokesperson for the Siloam police, W/O Edward Tharaga, said Miss Mukhuba died at about 19:00 at the scene of the incident. According to him, Mukhuba had just broken up with Khuthadzo Ratshilumela (22), who was allegedly refusing to admit that the girl no longer wanted him in her life. "According to our preliminary investigation, the suspect dragged Miss Mukhuba to a nearby bush, where he allegedly stabbed her many times all over her body," said Tharaga.

The suspect appeared in the Thohoyadou Magistrate’s Court on a charge of murder on Monday. The case was postponed to 13 September for a bail application and he is in custody.

In reaction to the incident, local municipal councillor Ms Maggie Mathalise called upon all people who might be having marital or relationship problems to consult social workers for counselling, rather than resorting to killing each other. Mathalise said that it was also bad that the incident took place during Women's Months, when the important role of women in society was highlighted.

Miss Mukhuba will be buried at Tshavhalovhedzi tomorrow (Saturday). The event will start at 06:00.
