“Notable improvement” at Tshilidzini Hospital

The situation at Tshilidzini Hospital, sometimes blamed for poor service in the past, has improved considerably.

Following a visit by the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) and members of the provincial legislature last year, the hospital showed notable improvement in terms of infrastructure, service and human capital this year.

During a recent site visit at the hospital by the same bodies in what is known as NCOP Provincial Week, they found that most of what they had recommended had been dealt with and progress has been made in most of the aspects. In his presentation, Tshilidzini Hospital CEO Mr Mpho Mufamadi conceded that, despite having some challenges, they had made strides in improving the situation at the hospital.

“We can confirm that the national department is busy with the revitalization of the infrastructure here and we have also been able to purchase the much-needed machinery, such as three anaesthetic machines. Our wards were upgraded, room air were conditioners installed and a stand-by generator was fixed." He added that they had also installed flood lights for the purpose of visibility at the hospital, while the staff accommodation for doctors was renovated. They had also purchases new kitchen equipment, which would be soon installed for efficiency in the kitchen, he said.

Mufamadi said their laundry had also been upgraded to such an extent that they were also assisting Elim Hospital with their laundry. He said, however, that they they still faced challenges as they had to transfer psychiatric patients to Siloam Hospital, because Tshilidzini's ward had burnt down some years ago. “We are also happy to announce that the Thulamela Municipality has come on board and they will partner us in improving the entrance by building stalls for hawkers,” he said.

The leader of the delegation, Ms Tsapane Mammpuru, said that the delegation was exited to find that most of what they had recommended the previous year had been dealt with. “We are extremely happy by the progress made since we came last year. There are still challenges here and there, and we are still going to pass them to the relevant bodies. We will also inform the MEC, so that the problems can be dealt with for the benefit of our communities,” she said.
