“Respect all our different cultures”

The principal of Progressive Primary School in Thohoyandou Block F, Ms Ann Landsberg, urged communities, irrespective of their colour, race and creed, to treat each other’s culture with respect. She spoke during her school’s recent Heritage Day celebrations.

Progressive Primary is typical of the Rainbow nation, with almost all the cultures represented. During the celebrations, pupils showcased their different cultural dances and different cultural foods.

Landsberg said they found the day very important in that it reminded the young ones of where they came from. “We are a mixed cultural school and we do not want the children to forget their roots and shy away from their cultures. Some of them do not even know the rich cultural foods that are there and some think cultural dances are barbaric. We are hereby reminding them that it is important to know who they are, in order for them to know where they are going as future leaders of this country."

Young Grade 6 pupil Elelwani Mulate (12) of Thohoyandou Block F said the day meant a lot to her. “I was born in the township where most of the traditional things are not done. This day helped open my eyes as I now know which type of food our forefathers ate and the dances that we are supposed to dance, which have to do with our culture. We are just happy that all cultures are respected here at our school and we enjoyed it a lot."
