Workshop provides important information to farmers

Ribola Plastic and Nursery, in partnership with Sakata Seed, initiated a workshop for emerging farmers at Elim last Tuesday. The aim of the event was to equip the farmers with the necessary information on how to develop their farms.

An expert and the CEO of Intens Agri Hydro, Mr Paddy de Vries, said during the event that most farmers failed because of inadequate information on how farming operates. He said that workshops could help to improve farmers' farming methods and assist commercial farming.

Ribola Plastic and Nursery's marketing director, Ms Basani Ramapulana, said that besides selling seedlings and ornamental plants, she felt the need to add much-needed value to her clients' farming projects as well as other farmers within the community.

One of the farmers who attended the workshop, Mr Falaza Mathebula, said that he was hoping to acquire a lot of knowledge to improve productivity and reduce some of the challenges that he came across when farming. “Farming these days is so challenging that now and then you have to search for knowledge, information and support from various sources. I think that, by attending this workshop, some of the challenges we generally take for granted will be reduced,” said Mathebula.

The manager of emerging markets at Sakata, Mr Paul Ntshabele, said that workshops for farmers should occur frequently as most farmers needed knowledge and understanding of how to farm from the preparatory stages. “Sakata is backed by more than 100 years of experience. I believe we can add much-needed value as we are good and experienced at what we do.”
