New infrastructure for Renaissance School

The pupils of Renaissance High School in Musina rejoiced when De Beers Venetia Mine donated 12 new classrooms to the school last Thursday.

The total value of the new infrastructure is R12 million.

Ms Josephine Peters, the mine's corporate affairs manager, said during the event that the government alone could not cope with the demand for basic facilities and De Beers believed that it was important that the business sector should assist wherever possible.

Peters said De Beers directed its social investment to areas where it could make a real difference and have a positive impact in the community. "Education has been a key focus area of the company's corporate social investment programme, because they believe that education and youth development are important for the future success of the country."

The MEC for Education, Mr Ishmael Kgetjepe said he hoped that other companies or businesspeople would learn from De Beers by donating something that could help the education of the local children. "There is a serious shortage of classrooms in our schools as many of us are in rural areas. We hope more companies will open their hearts to help improve education for our children," said Kgetjepe.

The principal of Renaissance High School, Mr Mashudu Sithole, said that through the donation the learners were going to learn hard and improve their results. "Due to a lack of resources, we were teaching in overcrowded conditions. I am very happy that Venetia came to our rescue," said Sithole.

The mayor of Musina Municipality, Cllr Mihloti Muhlupe, praised what Venetia Mine had done to help the government to improve the education of the learners. She appealed to other companies to follow the example set by De Beers.
