Davhana task team want chief suspended

The Davhana Development Task Team (DDTT) is calling for the suspension of Chief Davhana David Davhana (68), pending the finalization of his case by the courts.

Davhana is facing charges of being in possession of an unlicensed fire-arm and discharging it in public. This follows an incident on 23 April last year, when the Chief allegedly fired three shots into the air during a meeting held at his kraal. The meeting, which was attended officials from Makhado Municipality, SAPS members from Vuwani and members of DDTT, was about resolving his disagreements with the task team.

Davhana had already appeared before the court on 27 February this year, and his case was postponed to 20 April. The case could not, however, be heard as Davhana's new lawyer requested further postponement. The lawyer said that they still wanted to familiarize themselves with the case. When he appeared on 25 April, the case was postponed to 20 June for trial.

During Davhana’s last appearance in the Sibasa Regional Court, the court was filled to capacity, mainly by community members who are opposing him. Some of the people who could not get inside the court also waited outside until the case was postponed.
