Young mathematician source of inspiration

A 22-year-old student at the University of Witwatersrand and resident of Tshidimbini village, Muimeleli Mutangwa, is a source of inspiration to many young people.

Muimeleli had just presented a mathematical model during the fourth International Conference on Sustainable Chemical Product and Process Engineering (SCPPE) 2016 in Nanjing, China. The conference took place from 31 May to 3 June.

“I had formulated the mathematical model as part of my master’s degree in sustainable process engineering,” he said. “I formulated the model under Professor Thokozani Majozi. The SCPPE is an academic conference where scholars and academics from all over the world, working in this field, meet annually to share knowledge and discuss future collaborations.”

Muimeleli revealed that it was his first experience travelling abroad. “I won the Best Oral Presentation - Student Category award at this international conference,” he said. “The title of my presentation was Sequence Dependent Changeover as a Wastewater Minimization Technique in Multipurpose Batch Plants.”

Muimeleli had matriculated at Tshivhase Secondary School in 2010. He then obtained his BSc Engineering (Chemical) degree at the University of the Witwatersrand in 2014. “I started my MSc Engineering (Chemical) on Sustainable Process Engineering the following year and I’ll be completing it this year,” he said.

“I am fundamentally an optimist and I believe in the future prospects of the youth of today,” he said. “I am convinced that entrepreneurship has the potential to eradicate most of the challenges that we face as a society, including problems affecting the youth.”

Muimeleli owns a small company, called Tailor Klinik, where they clean shoes for a fee, using a shoe-washing liquid detergent that he had created using his chemical engineering knowledge. His Facebook pages are ‘Before Varsity’ and ‘Tailor Klinik’.

“I authored a book entitled Before Varsity – A Must Read for High School Students Considering University,” he said.
