Uncertain Mutale employees on strike

With the 2016 local government elections closing in, employees of the Mutale Local Municipality (MLM) have downed tools for almost three weeks and have closed the entrance gates of the municipality.

They say they cannot work, because they are not certain about their placement after 3 August and they need explanation from the municipal manager and mayor. Mutale will be disestablished and its portions incorporated into the areas of Thulamela and Musina municipalities after the municipal elections.

The closure of the offices of the municipality also have a negative effect on communities who need services. Communities are also worried that services such as refuse removal are not effectively taking place, driver's licence testing is closed and graders are not working.

When Limpopo Mirror visited the municipality on Monday, the entrance gates were closed and chained. The chairperson of the South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) at the MLM, Mr Colbert Nempumbuluni, says workers cannot work, due to the uncertainty about their future placements.
