Truck accident causes N1 traffic headache

Traffic flow on the N1 north between Louis Trichardt and Musina was disrupted following a truck accident Saturday morning.

As far as could be determined, the truck was being towed to Musina, when the tow-trucks breaks apparently failed down the steep Soutpansberg mountain pass. Both trucks started accelerating with the truck being towed at one stage coming loose and overturning. The tow truck managed to come to a stop a couple of hundred metres further down the mountain pass. Luckily, no one was injured.

The overturned truck did, however, cause a massive diesel spill on the road. Apart from this dangerous situation, the truck lost its load of rice. This caused road officials a massive headache, as members of the public swarmed the scene, desperately trying to fill each and every bucket or bag they had with rice. A road works official on the scene said they desperately tried to prevent the public from removing the rice from the scene, but eventually just had to give up trying.

At around 13:00, the truck was still obstructing one of the N1 lanes for motorist traveling south. (Single lane traffic only).

Motorists are warned to use extreme caution when traveling this stretch of N1, due to the amount of diesel on the road surface. Road works officials were, however, busy addressing the problem.
