Soccer kit for Madombidzha’s grannies

The manager of Madombidzha Western Stars, Mr Oscar Ramantswana, donated a soccer kit to the Madombidzha Grannies soccer team on Sunday.

The gogos could not believe their eyes when they received the new kit and a soccer ball.

Ramantswana said it touched his team after learning that the old ladies were playing soccer without proper sports attire. He said the old women were a true example of women empowerment, because they were displaying that there was no longer a sporting code for a certain gender.  “You are keeping your bodies healthy and you must remember that a healthy body harbours a healthy mind. Let’s do away with the idea that elders are supposed to sit at home, doing nothing until sunset," he added.

He encouraged the elderly to keep up their active lifestyles. "You are a very good example to your children and grandchildren and we hope that they will follow in your footsteps."

The team was established in 2013. The organization currently has more than 20 elders attached to it. The team captain, Ms Evelin Tshikosi, said the team was established with the aim of helping the elders to relieve stress and keep them healthy. "Exercise is very important for the elders who spend most of their time sitting down, not doing anything," she said. “We love soccer and that is why we kept on playing, despite the fact that we didn’t have proper clothing.”
