Leopards vs Da Gama in Nedbank quarters

The Nedbank Cup quarterfinal draw created some interesting match-ups when it was held at the Southgate Mall in Johannesburg on Monday afternoon.

After facing the toughest hurdle ever in the form of Kaizer Chiefs last weekend, Black Leopards will face Vasco da Gama in the quarterfinal stage. Unlike in the last-16 stage of the competition, where Lidoda Duvha played away from home, this time around they will play in front of their home crowd.

Vasco da Gama’s way to the quarterfinal went via the Maluti FET College, whom they beat 3-0 at the Parow Park Stadium in Cape Town. Leopards and Vasco da Gama met in their league match at the Thohoyandou Stadium three weeks ago, with Leopards winning 1-0.

When asked about his views about the draw, the chairman of Black Leopards, Mr David Thidiela, said that they couldn’t ask for anything better than Vasco da Gama. He said that the fact that it would be a home fixture was a bonus to them.

Three-time winners Supersport United were drawn against the NFD side, Lamontville Golden Arrows. Supersport United will enjoy home-ground advantage. Golden Arrows beat Natal United 1-0 in their last-16 stage match at the Chatsworth Stadium in Durban last Saturday, while Supersport United beat Orlando Pirates to secure a place in the quarterfinal stage.

Mamelodi Sundowns will travel to Mpumalanga for their top-16 match against Mpumalanga Black Aces. Mamelodi Sundowns beat Platinum Stars 3-0 in their last-16 fixture last weekend, while Black Aces kicked Jomo Cosmos out 1-0. The toughest match will be between Ajax Cape Town and Bidvest Wits in Cape Town.

The quarterfinal matches will be played over the weekend of 11 and 12 April.
