Controversial victory for Arsenal

Although Arsenal FC beat Munangwe United Brothers 3-1 in the final of the MTG and PIB Soccer Challenge at the Makhuvha Stadium on Tuesday, they will have to wait for the league’s disciplinary committee to declare them as the champions.

United Brothers lodged a protest with the referee during the game. In the protest, United Brothers alleged that a number of Arsenal players were not properly registered with the team. The prize-giving ceremony, which was supposed to have been held at the stadium after the game, could not be held, pending the disciplinary committee’s decision on the protest.

As if they were hypnotized, United Brothers’ midfielders were out of touch for the better part of the first half. Instead of capitalizing and scoring an avalanche of goals in the first half, the Arsenal strikers squandered numerous scoring chances. They managed to convert only one of their countless obvious chances. They took the lead in the 27th minute. Mashudu Netshitavhe caught the Brothers’ keeper, Hataluli Mathavha, napping when he unleashed a volley from the 25 meter area.

Brothers were the first to effect change to their starting line-up. They replaced Ampfarisaho Kutama with Khethani Netshishivhe towards the end of the first half.

Brothers made amends and took the game to Arsenal in the last half. Arsenal abandoned their positions and played defensive football, relying on counter-attacks. Arsenal increased the margin in the 64th minute. Mashudu Netshitavhe beat the offside trap before sending the keeper the wrong way.

Example Chauke scored the only goal for Brothers with a half-volley seven minutes later. Arsenal put matters beyond doubt when they scored the third through Murunwa Ramaada late in the game.
