Top 8 of Gwede Mantashe this weekend

The last eight teams left in the Gwede Mantashe and Matsila Development Trust Challenge will play their matches on Saturday and Sunday at the Makwarela Stadium. The teams that can still win the event are Wayeni Sea Robbers, Mpheni Home Defenders, United Artist, Rockers FC, Phandulaluvalo FC, Tshivhidulu Hungry Lions, Mukula Young Santos and Mudziafera Blue Eagles.

“I’ve told my boys that we can perform well this year, if we just focus and give our best. We are ready for the final battle. By winning the soccer challenge, we will not only make ourselves proud, but the community and management as well,” said Mpheni Home Defenders' head coach, Mr Vhutshilo Phuravhathu.

He also acknowledged that they had learnt from previous mistakes in their Nedbank Cup “slip-ups” and would have a different approach this time: “Previously we lost due to a lack of concentration. The boys have to master the art of concentration and focus. I have therefore prepared them mentally not to make simple mistakes.”

The coach of Santos, Ms Julia Radzilani, said that the coaching the team "has brought nothing but joy to my heart. I have seen how they have grown in confidence each year.”  Mr Boly Baloyi, the coach of Wayeni Sea Robbers, said that he was happy with the way the team was gelling. “They are doing their best and we have a good understanding. Apart from the fact that there is a lot at stake in the competition, it is time for us to fulfil our promises,” he said.

Rockers FC captain Mr Mukond Tshivhula said the team had received tremendous support from the management. “Just getting to the quarterfinals has made a difference to the boys in terms of confidence and motivation,” he added.

The winners of the competition will receive R15 000, a floating trophy, gold medals, two soccer kits and soccer equipment.

The sum of R10 000, silver medals, two soccer kits and soccer equipment await the runners-up, while the two teams ending up in third and fourth position will each receive R5 000, soccer kit and soccer equipment. All the remaining teams will receive soccer equipment.
