Young Santos defeat Breakers

Mukula Young Santos beat Folovhodwe Stone Breakers 2-0 in the final of the Tshikosi Off-season Soccer Tournament at the Makonde Home Defenders grounds on Sunday.

Santos’s victory did not come cheaply as the two goals were scored from penalty kicks. Young Santos threw away their first scoring chance in the 19th minute. Their vastly experienced midfielder, Humphrey Takalani, watched in disbelief as his close-range volley missed the goal mouth by inches, much to the fans’ disappointment. That was a wake-up call to the defenders of Stone Breakers.

They regrouped from behind, creating some promising moves as they passed the centre half, but their strikers were unlucky. Stone Breakers’ overlapping defender, Hulisani Nefolovhodwe, missed a fortune in the 38th minute. He forced his way through the defence of Santos and unleashed a ground cutter that went a little wide.

Stone Breakers refused to die in the first half as the score sheet was still blank when the teams adjourned for half time. Young Santos replaced Mmboneni Ligege with Dakalo Negota four minutes into the last half. The wheel of fortune turned against the team from Niani area in the 59th minute. This after their defender, Daniel Mbedzi, handled within the box. That was a clear penalty for Young Santos. Thitevhelwi Nembilwi made no mistake from the white spot.

Stone Breakers lost hope after Santos were awarded another penalty in the 78th minute. Vhahangwele Tshifhango was brought down within the box and the referee was quick to point at the spot. The players of Stone Breakers were not happy with the referee’s decision to award Santos a second penalty. They confronted him in anger, but he stood firm on his decision. Thitevhelwi Nembilwi converted again to bring the final score to 2-0.
