Thulamela ready for the sun's eclipse

THOHOYANDOU – Come the first week of December, Thulamela Municipality will be a hive of activities. According to the path of the 2002 solar eclipse, most areas of Thulamela Municipality are within the 100% eclipse zone.

According to a spokesperson for the Municipality, they are expecting many foreign tourists to visit the area on that day, and many of them might visit the Kruger National Park.

In order ensure that the needs of all visitors are accommodated during the solar eclipse, the following plans have been hatched:

A music festival will be staged at Magona Village on December 3 from 18:00 to 22:00. More than fifty international artists will perform so will local artists and cultural groups also expose their talents during the festival. Several stalls with exhibitions of artwork will add glamour to events on this day.

The Minister of Environmental Affairs and Tourism will officially open the Wisani Lodge at Mhinga on November 30. Several cultural activities are billed for the lodge until December 7.

Another centre of attraction will be the Thohoyandou Show, which will commence on Monday 2 and end on Saturday, December 7.

Local and international artists will perform during the show. In addition, sponsored cultural dance competitions, art and crafts, a merry-go-round, food stalls and other merrymaking activities will form part of the show.

It was also announced that close to R100 000 will be spent towards prizes for the cultural dance competitions.
