THOHOYANDOU - Hardly a week after had they released their album, The best of Khakhathi and Friends, the group suffered a big blow last Saturday, July 12, when one of their members died in a vehicle accident.
Joe Khopa (31), who played the bass guitar for the group, was from Polokwane. He was based in Gauteng at the time, where he was working with GTP Studio, where the group usually records its albums. He was killed in a car accident in Lydenburg. The leader of the group, Khakhathi Tshisikule, said he was devastated and confused about Joe's death. "I really do not know what to do. I was in Gauteng last week, where we had funny and constructive arguments as usual. I am not a kind of person who cries when a person passes away, but in this case, I have some funny feelings when I think about the internal politics that we discussed last week. I did not know that he was saying goodbye to me. But I had never seen him as angry with me as he was last week. He told me he was going to be based in Port Elizabeth or Cape Town, so I had to look for his replacement," Tshisikule said. He added that he interpreted it as a joke, as Joe was angry, "but now he is gone for ever. The bad thing is that he left while we have just started celebrating the release of our album, which contains our best songs. I too, was still celebrating the recording of the album, which features Colbert Mukwevho. It is pity he won't see this achievement with Colbert, who is a legend in reggae music," said Khakhathi.
Those who have seen the group performing live will remember Joe as a tall and light guy. He always wore a cap while doing what he did best, playing the bass guitar.
