Musina cleans up Ward 3

Musina municipal workers and caring community members had another successful clean-up campaign in Ward 3 of the Musina Municipality on Saturday.

Organised by the Vhembe District Environmental Health Unit, the campaign targeted illegal dumping sites around Ward 3 of the municipal area. Municipal spokesperson Wilson Dzebu said the main objective of the campaign was to educate the public on how litter impacts badly on the health of community members.

“It is very effective to give people awareness through action. People must make sure that their trash is securely placed in the proper receptacle. This means putting all thrash in dustbins and properly sealing your garbage containers. Business owners should also educate their employees by placing anti-litter signs next to their businesses. They must also encourage their employees to take pride in their workplace by keeping it litter-free.”

He says litter creates ugliness in public places, including streets, parks and waterways and impacts on real estate values. “Litter can kill aquatic life and decrease oxygen levels when it decays in water. Most litter can be recycled, which not only protects the environment, but it saves our natural resources, so people should make use of their recycle bins.”

He urges community members to report any form of illegal dumping to the municipality, so that appropriate action can be taken. He says the campaign is also looking for new ways to prevent littering through education and media relations. “We will also address issues around enforcement of by law in relation to littering in future.”
