Weaving project launched at Tshakhuma

The residents of Tshakhuma village were over the moon when a Ghanaian chief launched a weaving project in the area during an event that was held at the Tshakhuma Primary last Wednesday.

According to Cllr Rosemary Mufamadi, the launching of the project came after Chief Nana Osei Asibey Okofobour visited the area last year after he had met with Mr Muti Tshamaano, a resident of Tshakhuma, who is working at the South African Embassy in Ghana. "It was then that Nana decided to visit Tshakhuma, where he was introduced to Chief Andries Madzivhandila of Tshakhuma," Mufamadi indicated.

She added that Nana decided to launch the weaving project for the people of Tshakhuma.

The two chiefs, Madzivhandila and Nana, signed an agreement of partnership between the two areas, Tshakhuma and Oni, during the launching.

Chief Nana is said to be heading 121 villages of Oni in Ghana, with 121 headmen.

In his address during the launch, Chief Nana indicated that he felt very honored and happy about the partnership. "I believe that this is a relationship that will last forever. I am very delighted to see that the people of Tshakhuma are happy and supportive of the project," Nana said.

He urged all the residents of Tshakhuma to participate in the project. "The project is not only meant to benefit the Tshakhuma residents but the communities of Vhembe in particular," Nana further indicated.

The project is said to be aimed at addressing the job crisis amongst the Tshakhuma people, as it is going to create jobs. The project, according to residents, will also keep young people busy, which will impact on the reduction of crime in the area, as they won’t be lingering around any more.

In an exclusive interview with Mirror, Chief Andries Madzivhandila stressed that the project was a good agreement and preparation for future generations. "All the headmen in this area must encourage their people to get involved. This is a historic project for the people of Tshakhuma, so I want all the people to benefit from it," Madzivhandila acknowledged.

The mayor of Makhado Municipality, Cllr Glory Mashaba, who formed part of the launch, said that she felt happy and very fortunate for the project to be launched within the municipality’s area of jurisdiction. She added that she was quite sure that the project would create job opportunities for the people of Tshakhuma and Vhembe in particular. "I encourage people to participate in the project. A lot of unemployed people will get jobs if the project succeeds," she acknowledged.

In addition, the executive mayor of Vhembe District Municipality, Cllr Philemon Mdaka, indicated that it was quite encouraging to see a chief from another country having an interest in the upliftment of the community. "This is the beginning of a relationship that will last forever," Mdaka said.
