African Son, another hit album from Jazzman Records

The man does not have a distinctive posture, but he is finally making a mark in the local jazz music fraternity.

Born in the small border town of Musina, Alfred Tshimane Chuene goes by the stage name of Jazzman. He recently released his debut album, titled African Son, through his own label, Jazzman Records.

Chuene started his musical career way back in 1993 while he was still very young. “I used to play different musical instruments at the local African Gospel Church. I became so interested in music that I would hang around the church, playing musical instruments even after the services.”

He said his breakthrough came after joining the local jazz band, Mindrands. “The band was a hit among the locals and we used to stage powerful shows in Musina. I played a significant role for the group to record their album in a Johannesburg studio at the time. Unfortunately, the album was not released, as a result of other unsorted logistics with the recording company. But that did not deter me from following my musical dreams until I decided to go solo.”

He says there were individuals who played a role in his musical career. “These include Prince Nxasana from Kwazulu-Natal, the local jazz music master Peter Mbedzi, local recording studio owner Obby Nkanyane and Musina artist Patric Masindi."

As a seasoned artist, Chuene has done recording sessions with artists like Paku and Vhembe Heritage and Ambani. As a performing artist, he has also shared the stage with big names like Mzwakhe Mbuli, Stimela, Colbert Mukwevho, Jonah Moyo, Zozo, Malandolo and Cornerstone.

As a multi-talented artist Chuene displays his talent by playing bass guitar, electric piano, brass and drums on his album. African Son is composed of 10 tracks: Party Time, the title track African Son, One big family, Mercy, Don’t make choices for me, Sympathy, Man about town, Love and Cherish, Unity, and Mustown.
