Only a couple of weeks after an ABSA ATM and two FNB ATMs had been blown up at the Nzhelele Valley Complex in Nzhelele, another ABSA ATM was blasted open at Levubu last Friday.
The incident happened at about 01:00 at P&L Hardware's premises in Levubu. More than R100 000 was allegedly taken from the ATM during the bombing. The spokesperson for the Levubu Police, W/O Solly Mukhola, confirmed the incident. He said that three unknown men had gained entrance after cutting a hole in the fence.
"A security guard came running to the police station, and when our police team rushed to the scene of the incident, the criminals had already gone," he said.
According to Mukhola, R55 400 was found scattered all over at the scene.
"We have opened three cases: that of theft, malicious damage to property and the illegal use of explosives," said Mukhola. He added that police investigations were still continuing.
Meanwhile, when contacted for comment on what the police were doing about the alarming spate of ATM bombings in the Vhembe District, SAPS provincial spokesperson Lt Col Mohale Ramatseba said that the police were aware of the incidents and that the crime intelligence unit was busy investigating.
"Hopefully, we will be able to crack down on and arrest the culprits," he said.
