Zim worker killed by giraffes

A 52-year-old farm worker at Cawood Estate outside Beit Bridge suffered fatal injuries when he was attacked by giraffes, police have confirmed.

The man was reportedly riding a motorbike and, on approaching a sharp bend, he lost control of the bike, resulting in his running into giraffes grazing along the roadside. The animals apparently attacked him and he died on the spot.

The local police spokesperson, Supt Christopher Chisedze said the incident occurred on Friday, at around 15:00, at Cawood farm.

“We suspect the victim was speeding, but we are still investigating.” Supt. Chisedze identified the deceased as Jewel Ndou of Chief Sitauze area in Beit Bridge district.

The body was taken to the Beit Bridge District Hospital mortuary.

Meanwhile, the incident has sparked an outcry among the farm workers and the local surrounding community, who are now demanding the farmer to kill the animals. “This is not the first time that the same giraffes have attacked a person and our worry is that the farm owner is not doing anything to address the problem. It seems the farmer values the life of an animal more than human life,” said a worker, who declined to be named.
