Top awards for Zoutnet during LiN Awards 2013

The Limpopo Mirror and Zoutpansberger, belonging to the Zoutnet group of newspapers, featured prominently during this year’s LiN Media awards and collected no fewer than 16 prizes. The Newspaper of the Year award went to Limpopo Mirror with the Zoutpansberger in third place.

The LiN Media award function seeks to give recognition to achievers in the fields of journalism, photography, lay-out, marketing and website design. LiN Media is the biggest umbrella body for publishers in the Limpopo Province and currently represents nine independent newspapers.

This year’s big award, the Newspaper of the Year, went to the Limpopo Mirror team. Last year’s winner, Die Pos from Bela-Bela, came second, with the Zoutpansberger third. The Limpopo Mirror’s editor, Wikus Lee, ascribed the success to a dedicated and very loyal team of workers. Some of the Mirror’s correspondents have been supplying news to this paper for over 23 years. This newspaper has been the top-selling local paper in the province for the past seven years.

A couple of new categories were also introduced this year. One of these, the Marketer of the Year award, went to Zoutnet’s George Janse van Rensburg. His colleague, Yolanda Kock, ended second, with Cindy Pretorius from Noordelike Nuus in third place.

The work of the design teams of the various newspapers were also judged. In the category Small Advertisements, Zoutnet’s Dallien Viljoen collected the first prize. Willie Nel from Die Pos/The Beat was second and Luandi Smit (Zoutnet) was third. Dallien also won the category for Large Advertisements. David Morrison from the Bulletin (Tzaneen) was second and Dolla Költzow (Noordelike Nuus) was third.

As was the case last year, the photography categories drew a number of excellent entries and the standards set were quite high. Herman Steyn from Die Pos once again collected the top prize for best photo, but he came up against strong competition in the form of Zoutpansberger’s Isabel Venter. In the Photography: News section, Herman won, with Isabel in second place. Andries van der Heyde from Die Pos was third.

Isabel Venter turned the tables in the Photography: Features section and received the first prize. Herman Steyn was second, with Kwêvoël’s Michelle Laubser in third place. Herman won the Photography: Sport section, with Valerie Cilliers (Noordelike Nuus) second and Andries van der Heyde (Die Pos) third.

In the writing categories, Zoutpansberger and Limpopo Mirror’s journalists left their mark. The stalwart correspondent of the Mirror, Frank Mavhungu, won the Sports category. Jasper Raats from Noordelike Nuus was second, with Connie Labuschagne from Die Pos third.

Zoutpansberger’s Isabel Venter showed that she has come of age and won both the Human Interest and Hard News section in the writing category. In the Human Interest section, Zoutpansberger’s news editor, Andries van Zyl, was second with Lizzy Bapela from The Beat (Bela-Bela) in third place. In the Hard News section, Andries van der Heyde from Die Pos was second and Limpopo Mirror’s Elmon Tshikhudo was third.

The prize for the best website went to Die Pos, with Tzaneen’s Bulletin in second place. Kwêvoël from Thabazimbi was third.

The prize for Best Front Page went to Die Pos. Zoutpansberger was second in this category, with Limpopo Mirror in third place.

The judges for this year’s competition included several well-known names in the industry, such as Barry Bateman from Eyewitness News and the journalism department at the Tshwane University of Technology.
