Anger as councillor leaves meeting

News  Date: 07 June 2013

A community meeting meant to resolve outstanding issues between the local ward councillor and the community ended abruptly when the councillor marched out of the meeting while it was in progress.

The meeting, which attracted many community members, took place at Tshivhazwaulu Primary School on  Saturday a fortnight ago. It was about the people who had allegedly been hired improperly by the councillor for projects being undertaken in the community.

The meeting was progressing well and was about to reach closure when members of the community demanded that the councillor withdraw the people that she had allegedly hired without following procedure. Out of the blue, the councillor, who was sitting with the local traditional leader, stood up and walked out without uttering a word.

That was when the members of the community saw red and tried to grab her but were restrained from doing so by the leadership. The angry members of the community assembled again and took a resolution to march for the removal of the councillor. “We are tired of this rude woman who does not have even respect for our local traditional leader. We had issues to discuss with her, but all the time we wanted to meet her, she would give excuses. We were happy that today we would be able to resolve the issues, but now that she has gone we are left with no option but to call for her removal,” said Ms Sylvia Mmakgaa, a community leader.

“We have a list of all those people who were employed by the councillor and she had promised that she would withdraw them, but she is not sticking to her promise. All we want is that all those who were employed in a corrupt way should be replaced by people who are legitimately chosen, following the people’s will,” she said.

She said people had passed a vote of no confidence in the councillor as she had shown no respect for the people who had elected her.

"We are all going to march for her removal, come 7 June. We will show her who her real boss is. We will march from Kolkoshani Secondary School to the municipality’s offices in Vuwani.”
