Labour minister visits poultry project

TSWINGA - The members of Tamisani Rural Poultry Project, which is situated in the Tswinga area near Thohoyandou, were excited when the Minister of Labour, Membathisi Mdladlana, visited the project on Tuesday.

The visit to the project was a part of his national Imbizo to visit rural people.

The project was established in 2001 with 10 members, in an attempt to create jobs and to alleviate poverty in the area. They received a portion of land from the local headman and after several appeals, the Thulamela Municipality arranged a donation from the Department of Local Economic Development to start their project.

Local Economic Development has donated R1,59 million for sustaining and developing the project.

According to the chairperson of the project, Mrs Grace Muruba, all the project members are well trained and are able to manage their project. She also stated that they have learnt basic bookkeeping.

“Our families are eating healthy foods because we are getting money as our commission. This project is existing because my team is totally dedicated and devoted,” said Muruba.

At this stage, the project has 32 members and they are planning to expand the yard. The project is selling chickens to the schools, hawkers at paying points, and businesses around Venda.

Min Mdladlana said that people must support their community projects. He also warned the Tamisani Project not to give chickens free of charge to dignitaries and well-known people. At the same time, he bought three chickens for R100, instead of R60, and told them to keep the change, as part of supporting the project.

“This is a challenge to the other projects. If you need more training, please tell me. Please keep it up,” said Mdladlana.
