Hawks arrest several after spate of farm killings

 
Members of the Hawks in the province have managed to arrest suspects in most incidents of farm attacks that occurred in the province recently.

The Hawks arrested three suspects last Wednesday in connection with the attack and subsequent killing of Mr Albert van Deventer (63) of the farm Langwater on 13 March 2010. Van Deventer was attacked and shot in the head while working in his garden.

One suspect, Thabo Phasha (31), was arrested and appeared in the Louis Trichardt Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, March 30, in connection with the farm attack on the farm Balmoral in the Mara district. Mr Pieter Henry Snyman (56) was attacked, assaulted and stabbed to death. The case was postponed to 14 April 2010. The suspect is still in custody.

Two suspects were also arrested for the murder of Mr Josua Francois Booysen (69) and his wife, Esme Sheila Booysen (54). The couple were attacked and stoned to death when they returned from town to the farm Zaaiplaas, Tinmyne. The suspects, Frans Lamola (32) and Clifford Malete (26), appeared in the Mahwelereng Magistrate’s Court and the case against them was postponed to 22 April. The suspects did not receive bail and they are still in custody.

On February 26, the 60-year-old Mr Francois Ettiene Cammaerts was overpowered at the gate to his farm, Corn Hall. He was stabbed to death and his throat cut. Two suspects were arrested. Patrick Sebetha (22) and Piet Sedive (29) appeared in the Lephalale Magistrate’s Court last week and the case was postponed to 7 April. They  are also still in custody.

In the latest success story, the suspected murderer of Mr Paul Dunn (47), Rodgers Mkhabela, was also arrested last week He appeared in the Tzaneen Magistrate’s Court and the case was postponed to 15 April. Dunn was attacked in his house and shot dead. Only one suspect was arrested. The suspect did not receive bail and is still in custody.

Deputy Provincial Commissioner Dibero Molatjana, in charge of the Hawks in the province, congratulated the members of the different investigation teams for their dedication and diligence in tracking down the suspects.

“These members worked long and tiring hours, often sacrificing time with their families to track down the suspects,” Molatjana said. She also re-iterated that the safety of all citizens in the rural areas of the province is a top priority for the Police in Limpopo and that no stone will be left unturned to bring perpetrators to book.
