In an unexpected development, the South African Communist Party has announced that it will meet farmers' unions in the Far North of the country, to discuss farm security.

The party has expressed concern about three farm attacks in the Lowveld area of the Limpopo Province.

"The recent attacks are a blow to the people of the province, particularly the farming community," said SACP provincial secretary Justice Pitso.

The proposed meetings will focus on the need for peace and stability in rural areas, in order to accelerate economic growth and job creation. The SACP has urged remote communities to support police in their task, and to help consolidate police forums.

"Our understanding is that the farming community has a vital role to play in improving the lives of our people, through the reconstruction and development of our province, by creating jobs and fighting poverty. This is an essential task to be safeguarded," Pitso said.

The party also wants to discuss the living conditions of farmworkers with the agricultural sector.

"We want to make sure that farmers also improve infrastructure such as schools, health services and housing, and that they are paying a living wage to farmworkers", Pitso explained.
