Ululations and praise songs were the order of the day when Cllr Mihloti Ethel Ramoyada was sworn in as the new mayor of Musina Municipality during a special council meeting last Thursday.

This comes after the resignation of Cllr Carol Phiri as mayor of the border town municipality with effect from 3 July, after being in the hot seat for the past three years. Phiri remains a Proportional Representative (PR) councilor of the ANC in the council.

Ramoyada was sworn in by Magistrate Jan du Plessis.

In her acceptance speech, Ramoyada said that she was extremely honoured to have been elected mayor and that she gladly accepted the responsibilities entrusted to her. “I am full of expectations and, at the same time, serene and aware of the responsibilities I assume. I am boundlessly grateful to the ANC for empowering me by giving me the responsibility to make the daily life of Musina people better, and I can hardly keep in my impatience to start.”

She said Musina Municipality required many improvements and mentioned the bad roads, unemployment, provision of clean water and electricity and general service delivery. She assured the council that in all her activities, she would be guarded by the principles of the Bible and the Constitution of the country.

Ramoyada is a teacher by profession and has a qualification in computer studies, which she obtained in 2004. She recently completed a course in municipal finance management from the University of Pretoria. After relinquishing her teaching profession, Ramoyada worked as Superintendent for Waste, Parks and Recreation in the Musina Municipality. She later became a councillor representing Musina in  the Vhembe District Municipality.
