Old man killed by hyena

An 80-year-old man from Bvurungwa village outside Beit Bridge was attacked and killed by a hyena last week, while on his way to a church service.

Local police spokesperson A/Insp Jephry Mudzemba said the victim, Misheck Madechiwe was walking with his wife, Maria Mahwandu (63), when a hyena charged him. “The two were going to a church service when they came across a hyena. They advanced toward the animal and it briefly disappeared into a nearby bushy area. It then resurfaced a while later and attacked Madechiwe from behind,” Mudzemba said.

According to him, the wife of the victim used her umbrella to try and chase off the animal, but not before it had severed her husband’s left arm and bitten him in the face.

Another villager, who was on also on his way to the same church service, carried the victim to a nearby business centre. A report was then made to the police, who transported him to a local hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.
