Suspected rhino poachers arrested

 

In the midst of the national rhino-poaching crisis, police have managed to arrest three suspected rhino poachers on the Nwanedi Game Reserve in the Tshipise area.

According to provincial police spokesperson Col Ronel Otto, Nwanedi rangers spotted the suspects carrying a hunting rifle on Tuesday, 5 February. When the rangers confronted the suspects, a shoot-out between the rangers and suspects ensued. In the process, one of the suspects was wounded in his leg. 

The suspects fled but were later arrested at their homes at Muswodi village. An unlicensed .303-hunting rifle was confiscated from them and they were charged with trespassing, the illegal possession of a firearm and unlawful hunting.

At the time of our going to press, the three had appeared in the Mutale Magistrate's Court. They did not receive bail and their case was postponed for further investigation.
