Community to discuss expensive stands with Premier

Community members of Masisi in Mutale are planning to approach the Premier, Mr Cassel Mathale, to raise their concerns about the “expensive stands” that are being sold in their area by the local municipality of Mutale.

Community leader Maanda Netshipale says: “We are very disturbed by the fact that our municipality is demanding too much money for a mere residential stand that is totally empty.” Netshipale says he has been communicating with the local councilor, Shonisani Mafenya, and the municipality since last year, trying to get the price of the stands. “After many trips between Tshilamba and Masisi, we were finally told last month that we must pay about R12 000 for each stand as the place is earmarked for a residential area.

“This is very shocking because the stands they are talking about are empty. These stands are also next to RDP houses, so they cannot be of great value as the houses to be built there will be next to a low-cost area,” says Netshipale.

He also urges that the stands should be sold more cheaply because there is no electricity, sewerage, running water or tarred roads, “so there is no need to make them so expensive.”

Netshipale says the municipality’s move is also discouraging the local community from developing the area. “If the municipality is demanding this type of money, one cannot sacrifice it by buying a stand around here. It will be better to go to Tshilamba or Thohoyandou where there is better infrastructure.”

He says many people have already left the area to get stands in other areas, a fact which is affecting the development of the community.

Netshipale says the concerned community is busy collecting R100, so that they can hire a bus to transport them to Polokwane where they are planning to raise their concerns to the premier.

Attempts to get comment from the municipal spokesperson, Thiathu Ravhura, proved fruitless as he has not been answering his mobile phone since Monday.
