Prof Peter Amunga Mbati has been appointed as the Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University of Venda on a five year performance-based contract, with effect from the first half of the 2008 academic year.
According to the director of public relations and development, Mr Rufus Kharidzha, the council of the University of Venda accepted the recommendation of the interview committee that Prof Mbati be offered an appointment as Vice-Chancellor and Principal. He said that the appointment of Prof Mbati has been supported by both the Senate and the Institution Forum.
Mbati was born 45 years ago and he is currently a permanent South African resident, according to Kharidzha. Prof Mbati holds a Doctor of Philosophy (Parasitology) degree from Kenyatta University. He also has a National Research Foundation (NRF) rating of C2, which refers to established researchers with a sustained recent record of productivity in the field and who are recognized by their peers.
He has published more than 59 research articles in peer review accredited journals. Presently, Mbati is the Group Executive: Livestock Business Division at the Agricultural Research Council. At the time of joining the South African Agricultural Research Council, he was the Principal of the University of Free State´s Qwaqwa campus.
The appointment of the new Vice Chancellor and Principal brings to conclusion one of the 2005 mandates given by the council to the Interim Management team led by Dr Jim Leatt, namely to appoint a substantive Vice-Chancellor and Principal.
