New fire station for Vuwani communities

Gone will be those days when rural communities in Vuwani and surrounding villages have to fear unexpected fires, thanks to the Vhembe District Municipality, which is constructing the Vuwani Fire Station and Training Centre.

Vhembe District Municipality’s general manager for community services, Mr Alex Nemakonde, said the district has set aside R16.2 million for the construction of the fire station and training centre, which is said to be the third of its kind in Limpopo Province.

“As the first phase has just begun, it will have a guard house, the tower, lecture hall, gymnasium, administration block and smoke room, while the second phase will have a fire house, workshop hall and resident rooms for fire fighters. "We hope the construction of all phases will be completed before the end of this financial year,” said Nemakonde.

He said the training centre would prevent local communities from traveling long distances such as going to Thohoyandou and Louis Trichardt to access training.

Nemakonde added that they had built other fire stations in Musina, Mutale, Thohoyandou and Makhado to help to stop veld fires and the burning down of houses. “We find there was a need to cater for the community of Vuwani as it was far for our firefighters to respond quickly to this area when they were called. As a district municipality we are ready to change the life of our poor rural communities for the better,” Nemakonde said.
