Councillor dies in car crash

The death of a beloved councillor and an ANC candidate for next week’s local government elections, Cllr Christina Chisanga in a car accident on Tuesday evening, has left the Musina community devastated. She was involved in a horrific accident on the N1 road approximately 20 kilometres from Musina.

A sedan travelling from Musina collided head-on with her van while she was going home to Musina after attending a meeting in Thohoyandou. Police are investigating a case of culpable homicide.

Cllr Chisanga was a teacher at Matakwe Primary School and also a Councillor for Tourism, Projects and Gender at the Musina Local Municipality.

According to a spokesperson for the Musina Municipality, her colleagues will remember her as a strong leader who worked tirelessly to contribute towards the development of the community. She was involved in various committees that facilitated community development programmes, such as the Female Farmer of the Year Competition.

The Mayor, Alderman David Phologa expressed his condolences to the Chisanga family. “Cllr Chisanga’s passing has come at a time when we were together working around the clock preparing for next week’s local government elections. We are deeply hurt as she was one of our top ANC candidates and a hard working comrade. We wish her family and friends will forever remember her for her efforts in fighting for women’s rights”.

Cllr Chisanga’s political involvement dates back to the early 90s when she served as a Musina Branch Executive Member of the African National Congress (ANC). She climbed up the political ladder mostly leading the ANC Women’s League structures in Vhembe District until she reached the pinnacle of her political career when she was elected to serve as one of the three ANC women councillors in the nine member Musina Plenary Council.

She attended primary school at Bonwaudi and she passed her Std 8 at Nchaupe High School in Hammanskraal before matriculating in 1972 and then graduating with a Teaching Certificate at Kwena Moloto College. To further her education, Cllr Chisanga obtained a certificate in Project Management from Pegenesys School of Management. At the time of her death, she was studying for a National Professional Diploma in Education at the University of Venda.

She is survived by her husband, five children and three grand children. Funeral arrangements are underway.
