School aims to become home of sport stars

Officially opened, the new sports development centre of  Louis Trichardt High School will aim to become the home of future sport stars.

“We are going to create magic here,” said Mr Tobias Fourie to the Limpopo MEC for Education, Ms Dikeledi Magadzi and her delegation, who attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony on Wednesday, 16 April.

As part of their sports development plan, the school has identified 100 athletes who will participate in the programme for free. Other pupils can join in the programme at a reasonable monthly fee. Pupils from surrounding and local schools – primary or secondary – are also welcome at the centre.

By including pupils from outside schools, the sports centre hopes to fulfil a future dream of developing into a centre for the whole of Vhembe - a vision that MEC Magadzi welcomed.

“The students will not only perform better athletically, but will also be better academic performers,” said Magadzi. “We are looking forward to seeing our pupils become international sport stars because it starts here,” she added.

Members of the public are still welcome at the school, but the centre is reserved for school pupils to improve their athletic abilities between 14:00 until 17:20 in the afternoon. During this time they will undergo training to give them a better competitive edge, whether they participate in rugby, netball, athletics or hockey.

In charge of the centre is Mr Felix Malan, who is also a local CrossFit-athlete. “We want to create a professional athlete who will have the ability to become a professional sportsman,” said Malan during a quick tour of the centre’s facilities. Students will not just receive weight training, but also cardio training. "Students will not repeat the same exercise programme every day; they will be doing different exercises to help them gain speed, stamina and strength," Malan added.

"Watch out, we are training hard," was the warning that the training athletes had for their rival schools.
