Bail for four suspected rhino poachers

The four men who were arrested in connection with an alleged planned rhino hunt at a farm in the Waterpoort area were granted bail of R5 000 each in the Louis Trichardt Magistrate’s Court on Friday.

Mushimi Musiamo (29), Albert Mawela (34), Richard Misili (40) and Edmond Ramukgopa (37) are required to report to the nearest police station between 07:00 and 19:00 on Fridays. The court further ordered that the accused could not leave the province without the approval of the investigating officer.

The four men were arrested on 13 January during a joint operation by members of the Crime Intelligence, Organised Crime and Tactical Response Unit. They were acting on a tip-off, said the police's provincial spokesperson, Lt Col Ronél Otto.

The first suspect was arrested when he came back to the vehicle to retrieve more ammunition. Two other suspects were arrested later on the farm grounds with the assistance of a helicopter provided by the local farmers. Police found the last suspect hiding in his room on the farm.

Police have since confiscated the accused's green Toyota Conquest sedan, a hunting rifle and an axe.

It has been established that Mawela and Musiamo are residents of Madombidzha village, while Ramokgopa comes from Ga-Makgato in the Capricorn district. Misili stays and works on the farm in Waterpoort.

Mr Desmond Mphaphuli appeared on behalf of the four men. They will appear again in court on 28 February.
