SPCA Notice

The SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) in Louis Trichardt has warned residents not to leave their pets inside vehicles.

Animal inspector Lawrence Khodobo cautioned that even with the best of intentions, you place  a pet’s life at risk when it's locked inside a vehicle. More so on a hot day when the inside of a car can heat up very quickly.

A closed car interferes with the animal’s normal cooling system, that is, evaporation through panting. Even if the windows are left open a bit, temperatures inside the car can reach scorching highs.

A dog or cat can only withstand a body temperature of 41 to 42ºC for a very short time before suffering irreparable brain damage or, even worse, death. Khodobo warned that in such a case, if a person is caught, they will be held accountable and charged under the Animal Cruelty Act.

If it should happen that a pet is suffering from heat exhaustion, Khodobo advises that the pet be immersed in cold water until their body temperature has been lowered. A good idea, especially with the school holidays around the corner, is to have the SPCA look have your pets while you are travelling.

It should be noted that the local kennel's booking fees have increased this year. Boarding for dogs now cost R40 per day and R30 per day for cats. These new rates will be applicable from 1 April.

Bookings can be made by phoning Khodobo at 082 965 5151.
