MEC launches drop-in centre at Mapate

MAPATE - Thousands of people flocked to the Mapate soccer grounds near Lwamondo in Venda last Friday, when the MEC for Health and Welfare, Mr Seaparo Sekoati, launched a drop-in center on Friday.

Nearly 400 orphans, who attended different centres, were over the moon when the MEC decided to launch the drop-in centre. The drop-in centre will cater for orphans and other vulnerable children from different areas, such as Mapate, Duthuni, Tshisaulu, Itsani and Maniini.

It will mainly assist children who are abused, neglected, poverty stricken and have contracted diseases like HIV/Aids and TB.

The co-coordinator, Mrs Alunananga Ravele, said that, through the new vision from the Department of Health and Welfare, children are going to receive a lot from the centre, such as a friendly environment and several life skills.

Mr Seaparo Sekoati said that the drop-in centres are part of the government’s commitment to fighting poverty and returning dignity to families and children in particular.

He also indicated that the government has put in place assistance programmes, such as social grants, to people who are in need. After the launching, the MEC planted a tree at the rural area of Mapate to mark the occasion.

“I’m pleading with CBOs, NGOs, churches and traditional leaders to continue working closely with the government to improve the lives of the children, disabled and older persons as we continue to build a caring and humane society,” said Sekoati.
