Malume receives award for service to the community

Famous Vhembe soccer legend, teacher and community leader Marcus Malume has received an award from Thasululo Ministries for his contributions to the community. Malume is a former player of Makonde Young Zebras and Makonde Home Defenders. Affectionately called Pele during his heydays, Malume was highly respected for taking corner kicks which went straight into the net without being intercepted. He is presently a teacher at Raluvhimba High School at Makonde village, north of Thohoyandou. More importantly, Malume is a Gota (village sub-headman) of Makonde-Tshituni and he spends most of his time tackling community development issues. Church leader Evangelist Thizwilondi Magalela said Malume was one of the forgotten heroes in the community "and we see great leadership in him. The standard of sport is what it is today because of heroes like him. During his teaching career, spanning more than 20 years, he produced lots of professionals who are occupying higher positions, both in the public and private sector.” Magalela further explained that it was through Malume that Thasululo Ministries became what it is today. “We approached him when we wanted to start this ministry and he gave us constructive advice, including how to get the site we are presently occupying. His contributions to the church cannot go unnoticed and that is why we are honouring him today. His voluntary community-building initiatives, which he has given to the community without profit, have been tremendous.” The jubilant Malume said he was surprised and couldn´t visualize that what he was doing was being watched by some community members. “I was not doing all this for name or fame. My desire is to help people and develop them, and I will do it as long as I live.” He encouraged other community members to participate in community-building initiatives without expecting rewards. “Community work is all about dedication and love for people. There is no other person who will come from afar to develop this community. It is our responsibility to make sure that we bring a better life to all. If I die now, I will die a happy man because there is nothing more gratifying than being honoured by your own people.”
