Consuming fire destroys buildings at Acacia Park

Residents of Thohoyandou P East looked on in dismay as a raging fire, which was burning in some nearby bushes, jumped a fence and destroyed buildings at the entrance to the Acacia Park resort.

Thousands of rands worth of damage is believed to have been caused by the fire. The wild blaze took place a fortnight ago.

According to information at this newspaper's disposal, the fire broke out in one of the bushy areas surrounding the resort. It is alleged that, due to the strong wind, the firefighters could not contain it and it spread to the adjacent park's premises.

The acting manager of the park, Mr Khathu Nebaimoro, reported that the gate and the reception area, including his office, burnt down and that nothing could be saved. The acting CEO of the Limpopo Tourism Agency (LTA), Ms Seipati Tlaka, said that it was sad "as this happened against the backdrop of a successful launch of the Reserve Renewal Project, which took place a week ago at Lekgalameetse Nature Reserve outside Tzaneen. We are heartened by the fact that there are no casualties reported during this tragedy."

She added that members of staff were working hard to assess the extent of the damage caused by this fire. "LTA sees this as a huge regression as Acacia Park was not on the list of the resorts to be renewed, given its acceptable condition. This means that our management will have to reconsider its plans, for this resort to be included for renovations,” she said.
