Linnda pursues perfection with his drawings

When growing up, Linnda David Muronga was a crafty kid, but little did he know that he could make a living out of it.

The 22-year-old was born and raised at Khalavha village and, according to him, he loves drawing because it makes him feel free. "Drawing gives me a chance to escape from everyday life into a creative space," Linnda said.

"Art means a lot to me. I believe that art will change my life. Art is my first love and I will never neglect it, because it would be to neglect the true roots of who I am. I believe that the only way to share in someone else's imagination is through art."

He added that everyone was born with a talent and every person must utilize that talent effectively. “It can put bread on the table for you. I respect my drawing talent and I really thank God for giving me this talent.”

Linnda said that he started drawing at a young age. "I still remember when I was in Grade R, we used to make art using mud and I was always the best. I had a friend at school who was the best in drawing, so I learnt a lot from him," Linnda said.

He said that he had been raised in a family that loved art. "My father, Moses Muronga, always tells me that he was good in drawing during his days, but he didn't go far, due to the background he grew up in. So, I believe that I took after him. He and my siblings always encouraged me to do more," he said.

Motivation and appreciation are the driving force behind his drawings. "The fact that people appreciate my work gives me strength to continue drawing. People around me motivate me a lot and advise me to utilize my talent. At school, teachers used to encourage me and stated that I could go far with my drawings," he said.

He told Limpopo Mirror that he used pencils for his drawings. "I use pencils for my sketches and portraits of prominent people. I believe that it's not about the materials that you use but an artistic skill that you possess.”

He said that since he had not managed to further his studies, he had decided to put more effort into his drawings. "I want to raise money through my drawings, so that I can further my studies. I want to study art because I'm passionate about it," he said.

Mbulaheni Ridovhona

The 22-year-old Mbulaheni (Gary) Ridovhona has been passionate about journalism to the extent that he would buy himself a copy of weekly Univen students' newsletter, Our Voice. After reading, he would write stories about his rural village, Mamvuka, and submit them to the very newsletter for publication. His deep-rooted love for words and writing saw him register for a Bachelor of Arts in Media Studies at the University of Venda, and joined the Limpopo Mirror team in February 2016 as a journalism intern.
