Makhado FM: Konanani's love for radio

A producer and presenter at a community radio station, Konanani Mavhungu, had her aspirations rooted in other career paths apart from the radio, but attending a media school had planted a love seed for the entertainment world.

A resident of Phadzima Vhulaudzi village in the Nzhelele area, Konanani attended Kundani Training College in Louis Trichardt.

“I had all along loved listening to the radio, most particularly the kiddies' programmes by Jennifer 'Lady J' Mushaathoni on Phalaphala FM,” she said. “But I had never thought at that time that I would one day find myself doing the same thing as she did – presenting a programme on radio. Soon after I had arrived at Kundani, radio was part of the course and I found myself enjoying it.”

Some time after Kundani, she joined Nzhelele FM as a volunteer presenter where she did two shows, Love Nest and a sports programme. “I enjoyed my time at the station and the experience had helped me chisel my skills as a live communicator,” she said.

She has been with Makhado FM for over a year now. She had manned the shows Morning Connection, Kiddies Corner, Young Mind, and Late Night Sunday.

Konanani holds a qualification in auxiliary nursing from Empilwebi Nursing College in Randburg, which she did from 2011 to 2013. “I wanted to add more value to the health life of our people upon graduating, but then I had switched from helping people in the medical field to healing them via the radio,” she said.

“At this time, my life mainly revolves around radio,” she said. “I love my radio community. To me, radio is a medium I use to reach the community and communicate messages that are most important to them.”

She currently produces Young Mind (Saturday 09:00 to 10:00) and Tsivhudzo (Monday to Friday 09:00 to 12:00).

Tshifhiwa Mukwevho

Tshifhiwa Given Mukwevho was born in 1984 in Madombidzha village, not far from Louis Trichardt in the Limpopo Province. After submitting articles for roughly a year for Limpopo Mirror's youth supplement, Makoya, he started writing for the main newspaper. He is a prolific writer who published his first book, titled A Traumatic Revenge in 2011. It focusses on life on the street and how to survive amidst poverty. His second book titled The Violent Gestures of Life was published in 2014.
