Ras Willie gets international exposure

The future looks bright for local traditional reggae musician Wilson Dzebu, better known as Ras Willie. This comes after he was signed by Gauteng-based label One Step Music. The company will market and distribute his music across the world. As from last week, Ras Willie’s music was already available on all digital music platforms, both locally and internationally.

Ras Willie has become popular among local reggae music lovers since the release of his debut traditional reggae album, titled Vhulunga Zwau, in October 2019. The album, which continues to receive airplay on various radio stations, won the Best Traditional Music Album category within three months of its release during the 2019 Front Seat Recognition Awards.

He said he considered himself very fortunate to have been associated with big brands such as One Step Music. “I have already signed the contract and the deal became effective last week. Indeed, good things come to those who wait. This is a very big breakthrough in my music career. It is a dream come true, because I always wanted to work with reputable companies in my musical journey.”

As an individual who wears many hats, Dzebu said that concentrating on other projects while One Step would be responsible for marketing his music would make his life easier. “I no longer have to worry about marketing my music, because I know that everything is well taken care of. There are many good artists out there, but they are not exposed because their music is not marketed. I consider myself one of the fortunate people because hundreds of artists could not get this opportunity that has been offered to me.”

The director of One Step Music, Langanani Mbodi, confirmed the signing of Ras Willie’s deal. “It is true that Ras Willie is now under our wing, and we will market his music throughout the world. Our aim is to expose previously disadvantaged local talent to the rest of the world. We have noted that his music is unique, and it could easily penetrate the international market. This is because he sings traditional reggae music based on the cultural and traditional roots of the African people. We are looking forward to establishing a fruitful working relationship with him and wish him the best with our company.”
