The mayor of the Musina Municipality, Cllr Carol Phiri, the Chief Whip and three councillors must step down as they are instrumental in poor servicve delivery, say the residents of this border town.

A large number of residents protested against poor service delivery on Tuesday. They say that they want the mayor, Carol Phiri, Chief Whip Simon Madamalala and Cllrs Evelyn Shirilela, Bigboy Ndou and James Kaunda to vacate their seats.

The residents marched from Harper to the municipal offices to hand over the memorandum to the chairperson of the ANC Musina subregion, Mr Fistos Mafela.

On Sunday, residents met in the Musina Community Hall to discuss the service delivery protests. The chairpesron of the Musina Residents Representative Committee (MRRC), Mr Mashudu Ndou, said the residents called for the removal of councillors, due to the track record of poor service delivery and interfering in administrative issues. The residents say that the five councillors' commitment towards service delivery and their inability to listen to the problems of the people raise questions.

“We are fed-up with corruption and nepotism in this municipality,” said Ndou. “We are going to fight this and we want those councillors to vacate their positions, since they are using municipal money for their personal interests,” Ndou added. Residents are also complaining about the shortage of traffic vehicles' leading to the fact that trafic officers are unable to carry out their duties.

In the memorandum presented on Thursday, residents say that there is no accountability of money taken from the Chinese, Pakistan and Indians businesspeople by Madamalala. Ndou says that they had marched on the 7th of March and submitted the memoraundum to the mayor and she hadn't responded on time. “We marched again on the 26th of April, as we wanted to give the MEC and ANC our memorandum, but the mayor refused to come out of her office to receive the memorandum,” said Ndou.

After a  mass meeting held on 6 May, the community marched to the house of the mayor and the Chief Whip, where the community told the two to resign.
