Murder mystery unfolds at AFB Makhado

News  Date: 13 May 2013

A case of murder is being investigated after a young woman was found dead in a swimming pool at Air Force Base Makhado on Tuesday.

The half-naked body of the woman was discovered by employees busy cleaning the pool on Tuesday morning. According to police information the woman, 21 years of age, was a civilian. It is suspected that she gained entry to the living area of the air force base by means of her boyfriend who is a member of the South African Air Force (SAAF). He is working at AFB Makhado.

Makhado police confirmed on Wednesday morning that the woman's boyfriend was arrested in connection with her death. By the time of going to press he had still to be officially charged with murder. Police also said that it would seem that the couple was fighting before the woman's death.

By Wednesday the woman’s identity was still unknown. Allegations that the woman was first rape and then murdered could not be confirmed.

Shortly after the woman's body was discovered, the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) released a press statement confirming the incident.

The suspect was expected to be brought before the Louis Trichardt District Court on Wednesday afternoon.
